Getting Tommy Hilfiger Ready With Deja Kelly at NYFW
By Justin Moran
Sep 11, 2024Rumors swirled about whether or not we’d actually take off into the river aboard Tommy Hilfiger’s show on the Staten Island Ferry. Although we remained docked in Manhattan's South Street Seaport, the iconic brand brought plenty of nautical energy to NYFW, ushering in a “New American Prep” wardrobe for its Spring 2025 collection.
Hilfiger revisited signature codes that have defined his brand since 1985, but “updated and remixed” them for today’s market: “The look has the ease of effortless summer style,” Hilfiger says of outfits primarily in red, white and blues, “but with a confidence that feels ready to step off the ferry and back into the city.”
In true Tommy Hilfiger form, the boat was packed bow-to-stern with VIPs, all who entered the event walking streetside alongside screaming fans pressed against railings. Stray Kids’ Felix and Lee Know were among the biggest stars, occasionally waving down to the crowd from the front row to an immediate roar of onlookers.
Also, names like PAPER cover girl Doechii, Jisoo and Tinashe were in attendance, witness to a special surprise performance from Wu-Tang Clan members Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Raekwon (with Questlove as DJ). Method Man fist bumped Anna Wintour and nearly everyone got out of their seats to dance.
PAPER caught up with basketball player Deja Kelly (now studying at the University of Oregon), who recently became the first NIL College Ambassador to sign with Tommy Hilfiger. Below, Kelly gets ready for the show at her hotel.
What do you think makes Tommy Hilfiger such an iconic American brand?
Tommy has been around for such a long time and only continues to get better. I think that’s what makes you an icon. No matter what brand comes along, Tommy remains on top and the brand everyone relies on when they want that classic American style.
What was your favorite memory from being on the Staten Island Ferry?
I wasn’t sure how they were going to do a fashion show on a ferry, but it was really cool to see Tommy pull it off. Watching Wu-Tang perform on the Staten Island Ferry is definitely a favorite memory. We were all so surprised when they started performing.
What's the significance for you to be the first NIL College Ambassador at Tommy Hilfiger?
Being the first NIL Ambassador at Tommy Hilfiger is such an honor. To be recognized as an elite athlete, who also has an impact in style and fashion is really a dream come true — and to be partnered with a brand like Tommy takes it to another level.
How would you describe your personal style?
I think my personal style is comfy chic. Because I’m always playing and practicing, I need to be comfortable, but I like to dress up and put on heels for pre-game tunnel walk ins and special moments. So I think I can really do both.
