Always Scrolling: Taylor Quitara
Aug 13, 2024
Always Scrolling is PAPER's spotlight on our favorite TikTokers in fashion, beauty, lifestyle and more. Keep reading to discover this week's viral sensation: Taylor Quitara.
Taylor Quitara is effortlessly cool, whether she's sharing her style diaries throughout New York City or oil painting in her studio. Even brands like Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui have taken notice, and tapped the Gen Z artist and content creator to collaborate.
"On the internet, I’ve somehow turned two of my passions, fashion and oil painting into my full time job," Quitara tells PAPER. "IRL, I’m just a girl rotting in bed with her cat. I’m very excited about my second solo art show in New York City this month, 'Things I Can’t Lay To Rest."'
The show, in partnership with Grey Goose, opens from August 15 to 17 at Detour Gallery and features dreamy oil paintings that depict both her most cherished and heartbreaking memories as she reflects on her transformation from girlhood to womanhood and the complex feelings that have come with mourning past versions of herself.
Below, PAPER chatted with Quitara about the unpredictability of her everyday life, her favorite fashion and beauty brand right now and the bar in Williamsburg that reminds her of Bikini Bottom.
@taylorquitara not me finishing this an hour before the fashion show tgod
What do you love about what you do?
I genuinely love how unpredictable my job can be. I’ll be painting at my studio, then all of a sudden I’m at the club getting a foot tattoo with Vera Wang. The next day I’m locked in at a cafe doing emails. The internet can be insane, but I’ve met some really special people who are now my IRL friends, and I’m just taking it day by day.
Who is another TikToker that you love right now?
I love Steph Ermer and her insane Betsey Johnson collection. The rare fruit dress: She has like four of them! She also talks about the history of each piece which shows her genuine appreciation for Betsey.
Craziest comment you’ve received on a post?
I had a bleach blonde bob at one point, and more than one person told me I looked like Ross Lynch. Is that a compliment? I think so!
@taylorquitara what is happening
What’s one of your favorite looks you’ve posted?
This outfit is special to me because each piece is vintage, and I had been hunting for them individually for years. It’s like I collected all the infinity stones and the Hello Kitty “Birkin” was the final one. My friend surprised me one day with 3D action figures of ourselves, and now it’s my forever OOTD.
What’s a trend that you love right now?
I love leopard print. Always have, always will. I also love that leopard print is trending at the same time as Brat. It just makes sense.
One that you hate?
Barrel jeans.
What would you never wear?
Those strange popcorn shirts, impossible to style.
Favorite fashion and beauty brands right now?
My favorite beauty brand at the moment is Saie. I just started using their products, and I fear I’m addicted. For my fashion people, I have a couple pieces by YVMIN, and they are probably my most complimented.
Who’s your celebrity crush?
Cillian Murphy.
What’s a good book you’ve read recently?
I’m 20 pages into A Court Of Thorns and Roses. So far, so good!
@taylorquitara why is shopping in japan so good i could cry #tokyothrifting #thrifting #tokyo #tokyovintage
Favorite restaurant in NYC?
Taqueria Ramirez in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I end up there at least once a week, and it is the best part of my week.
Favorite club in NYC?
To be honest, I love a good bar. Surf Bar in Williamsburg is basically Bikini Bottom. Don’t wear heels because there’s a lot of sand, and order the Bushwhacker.
What are four songs you have on repeat right now?
"Enjoy The Silence" by Depeche Mode, "Sympathy is a knife" by Charli XCX, "Blow" by Kesha and "Sleepyhead" by Passion Pit!
