Dom Forletta Makes Your Favorite Pop Star's Wigs

The year of Chappell Roan music was also the year of Chappell Roan hair — those red curly locks that bounce wildly as she kicks around stage singing “Pink Pony Club” and “Hot to Go!”
Hairstylist Dom Forletta helps keep the fantasy alive, often dramatizing her natural look with wigs: the instantly iconic Tiny Desk hive “stuffed with a trash bag” and decorated with used cigarettes, the minty green Statue of Liberty drag, the blonde Swan Princess Jimmy Falloncrimp. He’s also collaborated on all of Roan’s most career-defining award shows to date, from the VMAs’ shining knight to the Grammys’ rodeo clown.
And in between the chaos, Forletta manages to maintain an impressive roster of all our favorites, from Kesha to Mahmood and Rebecca Black (all while occasionally wearing a wig, himself).
Below for PAPER, he gushes about Fran Fine, reveals his favorite hair product and encourages us all to stop cutting our hair altogether.
Do you remember your earliest memories with hair? What attracted you to it growing up?
I came from a family of great hair. I was obsessed with my mom’s, specifically. She had the most beautiful long blonde surfer hair. I remember she would bottle ocean water all year long and spray it into her hair to give it beachy texture.
How would you describe your personal aesthetic and approach to hair?
It’s funny, sometimes I’m not sure how to describe my personal aesthetic. I spent my adult life living in LA, NYC and Berlin. I think I took a piece from each of them with me to develop my own eye for things.
Who has the greatest hair in pop culture history?
Fran Fine.
What's your favorite look you've made so far with Chappell Roan?
Tiny Desk. I did love Fallon, too.
What's the collaborative process like between you and Chappell?
It’s always super collaborative. She always has an idea and puts a lot of trust in me to bring it to life. She’s a dream to work with.
If you could get your hands on anyone's hair, dead or alive or fictional, who would it be?
Team Rocket. Hair icons.
What's one product you swear by that will never leave your kit?
Color Wow Shine Spray, it’s such an amazing finishing spray. The shine is out of control.
I love when you wear wigs. I ran into you wearing one ever-so-casually at Coachella. How does a wig make you feel?
It’s so fun, it almost feels like I’m role playing sometimes. I can be whoever I want to be in a wig.
What hair trends are you predicting for 2025? Anything weird we should be considering?
I feel like people have stopped cutting their hair. I’m not mad about it. Let it get long and stringy, I’m obsessed with that.
What's your official review of "Hair" by Lady Gaga?
Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it.
