Kacey Musgraves Covers Selena, Continues Iconic Streak
Feb 26, 2019
We all love Selena Quintanilla, the late '90s Tejano singer whose already-iconic status was immortalized by fellow immortal icon, Jennifer Lopez. And because also stan a paradigm-shifting ally, we stan Grammy-winning Kacey Musgraves, too. So it makes sense then that real recognize real, and Musgraves saw fit to pay divine tribute to Selena, an actual angel.
Back on the road, Musgraves sang Selena's crowd-pleasing classic, "Como La Flor" at the stop in Houston, Texas, which is the home state of both musicians. Musgraves performed this Monday at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, a yearly event that Selena once sang at, in her legendary purple bell-bottom jumpsuit, no less. Musgraves wore a white jumpsuit and led the song's beloved call-and-response portion.
Just a few nights ago on the Oscars red carpet, Musgraves noted that this was in the works. "I'm about to go to Texas and open the Houston Rodeo, and in my home state, that's a big deal," she told ET. "That was where Selena had her last concert. My whole family will be there, that's gonna be really fun."
Selena sister, Suzette Quintanilla, thanked Musgraves on Instagram for the tribute, writing: "Awww this makes me wanna shed a tear! Takes me back. A Big Big Thank you @spaceykacey for the love at the Houston Rodeo tonite with that SELENA Y LOS DINOS Jam!"
