Downtown Goes Uptown at The Winter Show

Last Thursday, Young Collectors Night at The Winter Show brought downtown faces uptown at the Park Avenue Armory. The 10-day antique and design fair is held every year to raise money for the East Side House Settlement, a community-based organization serving more than 15,000 families in the Bronx and northern Manhattan.
The Winter Show, founded in 1954, has long been associated with uptown New York City society; Young Collectors Night aims to bring younger artists into the fold. Each year, a young couple is chosen as honorees — this year, founder of design and architecture firm Charlap Hyman & Herrero, Adam Charlap Hyman, was honored with his fiancé, community organizer Adam Eli. The couple brought fresh faces like Bobbi Salvör Menuez, Julio Torres, Spike Einbinder, Jordan Tannahill and Hunter Abrams to the annual event.
Below, PAPER caught up with some of the young collectors to ask which pieces caught their eye at the event:
Bobbi Salvör Meneuz, Artist

Look at this vase, it looks like a bath for fairies, a pool for floating treasures. Imagine being the flowers placed in here for your brief blooming life, to gaze at a cradle of brass reflections as you wilt.
Oscar Nñ, Artist (and the night's DJ)

I wish I had time to walk around and see the show, but I basically plugged in and then when I finished we had to leave. Across from my DJ booth there were these beautiful pieces of jewelry though and I loved seeing everyone trying them on. I've never wanted a brooch so bad in my life!
Lío Mehiel, Actor

I loved this painting. The tongue, the juicy lips, the (gay) mullet of snakes and even the purple wall serving as the royal backdrop. It captures the energy of this moment — like, I’m so tired,, but I’m also gonna fight you, because the queer revolution is back with a vengeance.
Tatiana Hambro Arader, Editor

The boys brought the brooch back. An ornamented man is a beautiful thing, exemplified by our honorees in Verdura.

Spike Einbinder, Comedian

I couldn't take my eyes off these huge marble or stone dog statues that were mesmerizing. I love being a guardian of dogs and seeing their guardianship of us reflected through ancient art is so beautiful to me.
Conor Holloway, Artist

This linoleum cut print titled “the rowers” reminded me of the first person I dated when I moved to New York City. Our first date was at Coppelia on 14th street, we drank mojitos and ate guac and then I lost my virginity two hours later. They told me they were on the Harvard crew team. I had no idea what crew was but the word coxswain still makes me smirk.
Jordan Tannahill, Author and Playwright

I was struck by the Viennese Secessionist clock that won one of the Winter Show’s best in show prizes. It was only the fifth ever-made of its model, very beautifully crafted.
Hunter Abrams, Photographer

My favorite pieces were the César pendants. I would happily wear them for centuries! I love the idea of wearing a piece of art everyday instead of just looking at it on a wall.
