Between Telfar's opening slot in the Paris Fashion Week calendar and Nicolas Ghesquiere's Belle Epoque collection at Louis Vuitton, the City of Lights once again served as the culmination to a month's long worth of shows. American designers like Thom Browne and Joseph Altuzarra continue to show there, while viral moments at Chanel and Issey Miyake provided no shortage of entertainment. Surreal makeup looks abounded at Rick Owens and Balenciaga, and Paco Rabanne surprised us with its menswear debut. A dreamy collaboration between Dries van Noten and Christian Lacroix was another major highlight. Finally, moving collections from Alexander McQueen and Loewe at the end of a long season served to remind us just why fashion is still worth following. Here are the 10 biggest fashion fashion week trends for Spring 2020.
From asymmetrical sweater vests at Y/Project to oversized knit versions at Anrealage, the layering staple was anything but plain this season.
From giant ornate bows on backs at Balenciaga to pleated bows on the front at Balmain, the playful detail was blown up to bigger proportions all over the runways.
Feathers were the favorite embellishment on evening gowns everywhere from Valentino to Dries van Noten.
From heavy metal dresses at Balenciaga to Paco Rabanne's signature chain mail, the silver material proved popular in a variety of collections.
From large, graphic stripes at Balmain to the sleeker lines at Sacai, designers were very much into this classic combination.
From embroidered jackets at Redemption to the metallic suits at Paco Rabanne, flowers were interpreted in an abundance of ways, including micro-florals and large painterly versions.
Flowy, pleated dresses in bright colors and prints were a popular trend on the runways at Issey Miyake and Andrew Gn.
From the elegant bucket hats at Nina Ricci to the floppy, colorful versions at Lanvin, brands went bigger and bigger when it came to headpieces for Spring.
From the crafty red socks at Acne Studios to the grunge-y knit stockings at Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, there was no shortage of bold, colorful tights in Paris.
Lace dresses are nothing new, but designers this season experimented with them in a variety of ways, from pannier versions at Loewe to upcycled frocks at Alexander McQueen.
