At the end of his Spring 2020 show in Paris today, Dries van Noten surprised everyone when he walked out with a special guest to take his bow. It was none other than Christian Lacroix, the famed couturier who was the toast of Paris in the '80s and '90s. It turns out that van Noten enlisted his help to design this collection, which leaned big into Lacroix's extravagant theatricality and the Belgian designer's luxurious sportswear. Even though Lacroix hasn't designed ready-to-wear since 2009 (he works with stage costumes these days), it was a sharp reminder of how much fashion has missed this one-of-a-kind creative. Here's everything you need to know about the collection.
Long black ribbons and sashes, a popular Lacroix design signature, were tied around the majority of looks, giving them a fly-away effect.
Simple white tank tops were paired with extravagant skirts and ruffles for a high-low visual balance.
Loud tiger and zebra stripes were among the many animal prints featured throughout in a nod to the popular '80s print craze.
Van Noten's aesthetic came through the strongest with rich woven and metallic brocades in decadent colors and patterns.
Already one of the standout trends of the season, big and bold prints were jumbled up together to create a visceral collage effect.
