A New Kesha Era Is Upon Us

by Peyton Gatewood

Thirty-six years ago, Kesha was born to a future of blessing our ears with gritty-yet-sparkly pop music. For her birthday on March 1, she decided to give us another gift.

The “TiK ToK” singer erased all her previous photos from Instagram and sealed the act with a new profile picture, which seems to be Kesha’s official redesigned logo. Her new bio reads: “There’s a fine line between selling out and being bought.”

The pop star then posted a short video of herself, looking relaxed and cozy in all-white loungewear, lighting a white birthday cake with a match she stuck between her teeth. The audio is original, opening up with a sample clip that says “Everyone! It’s my birthday!” and fading into the beginning notes of a song with a heavy organ that sounds similar to the hum of an electric bass guitar.

“A NEW ERA?” a fan questioned in the comments. Kesha replied with simple eyeball emojis.

Last month, Kesha went briefly live on Instagram to preview 30 seconds of an unnamed song.

“The production sounds so fresh. This has potential to chart imo,” says one comment under a link to the live on Reddit's r/KESHA.

Kesha has been busy. In 2021 she released several collaborations such as “Chasing Rainbows" with Big Freedia and "Since I Was Young” with Wrabel. She wrapped the year with her fifth headlining tour, Kesha Live.

The singer is also branching into television. Conjuring Kesha, produced by the singer, stars Kesha and celebrity friends as they explore paranormal hotspots. The show airs in June on Discovery+. Despite all the exciting new projects she’s working on, it’s unusual for Kesha to go a stretch of time without releasing any singles. Even more reason for fans to speculate on a new album.

While many fans rejoice at the prospect of new music from their favorite artist, for Kesha fans, it’s bittersweet. The Nashville native has been fighting to leave Kemosabe Records, founded by renowned producer Dr. Luke, since 2014, and has still not been released from her contract. Kesha has been involved in a long battle to be released from her contract, citing the producer’s alleged sexual abuse. It’s likely the new album in question will be under the label.

While we wait patiently for new Kesha, let’s thank someone very special.
