Sex sells. Photographer Jacques Burga — whose work balances desire, sensuality, elegance and a little bit of rock and roll — knows this well.
The idea for his latest project was simple: showcase a hot guy feeling hot, which isn’t hard for a model like Sergio Perdomo. He knows he looks good and he likes the attention. It's sultry, but not over-the-top. It's understated, yet impactful, much like '90s minimalism at its peak.
"The narrative I usually like to portray contains elements of sensuality and rebellion in order to create discomfort, or comfort, depending on the eyes of the viewer," Burga tells PAPER. "The use of intimate or risqué poses combined with high fashion, vintage pieces creates an intentionally jarring yet alluring vibe."
Fashion seems like it's constantly changing, but it's actually all cyclical. Here, the aesthetic of Tom Ford's Gucci man really never left and is more present today than ever, especially under current creative director Sabato De Sarno. To make the vision come to life for this day and age, Burga scoured the renowned archives of Lab2022 for the rare pieces.
"This period was a time when minimalism, plus provocation, became a huge trend in both fashion and photography," says Burga. "These images embrace that ethos, with their stark, almost sterile backdrops that place the emphasis entirely on the human form. The clothing, or lack thereof, feels more like an accessory to the body, and the focus is on the natural contours and body."
