Girl Tones Rage on 'Fade Away'
Oct 24, 2024
Sister duo Girl Tones know how to throw — and trash — a party.
Kenzie and Laila’s brash debut single, “Fade Away, ” produced by Brad Shultz of Cage The Elephant, is a distorted, raspy ‘70s style rock track, all about “what happens when there is no closure,” vocalist and guitarist Kenize tells PAPER.
In the track, Kenize sings, “You deny your immaturity/ And as the train leaves the station/ Derailing the conversation.” “When you try to let go but you get hooked to the idea of whose fault it truly is,” Kenize adds. “Navigating emotions of love and frustration, they argue and bicker like children over a toy. Maybe there isn’t a right and a wrong, and it just needs to fade away.”
In the music video, premiering today on PAPER, the sisters crush flowers, tear through walls and rig drum kits with balloons. “Everyone loves a party,” Girl Tones tell us. “But when does it stop being a party and become a chore?”
The visuals reflect the central theme of “Fade Away,” which Kenzie describes as “being vulnerable and slowly getting burned over and over again by someone you love, to the point you have to move on with your life. You’re hurt, you’re angry, you’re owed an apology.”
It’s a strong debut from a band that’s excited to continue riling up fans and letting them decide which emotion they want to be left with. “As far as how we want people to feel with the song, we really just want our music to resonate with people in whatever way they need,” Laila says. “It’s important for people to absorb the lyrics and feel whatever emotion might find them within the song.”
Catch the duo this Saturday (October 26) as they play a special Halloween show at Nashville’s Cannery Hall.
