Structured Collars and High-Impact Neon at Balenciaga
Mar 04, 2019
Balenciaga's fall 2019 show had everything: laser strobe lights, the strong acidic smell of tar, cool tailoring, sporty neons and over 100 looks for all genders. Demna Gvasalia dedicated the show to the customers, the whole reason why he continuously creates, reportedly. Here's everything else you need to know about the show.
The show opened up with a selection of sharply tailored jackets and trousers in black. And it was a theme that continued throughout the collection, later in shades of pale yellow or electric blue.
Following Balenciaga's modern history of creating subverted proportions, all emphasis was put on the shoulders. They were oversized, raised near the neck or manipulated into bigger, rounder shapes overall.
The collection was dedicated to the customers — the ones who shop. Rather ironically, (or not) several models carried actual paper shopping bags down the runway.
Neon, one of the biggest trends, seen everywhere from Dries Van Noten to Saint Laurent made a major impact in the color palette. Nearly every shade you could imagine was brightened to electrifying shades.

Keeping up with the streetwear mentality that made Gvasalia have such a cult following with a certain cool kid crowd, the collection still maintained an array of hoodies, bomber jackets and winter-y vests.
