This weekend, Afropunk Brooklyn solidified itself as the go-to festival for everything love, light and Black. In spite of heavy criticism regarding Afropunk's deviation from grassroots punk to big-budget mainstream, the 2019 line-up boasted a strong balance of acts with major label representation as well as an incredible roster of indie and self-produced artists.
Some festival highlights included Rico Nasty's call for an all-girl mosh-pit, the electric theatrics of Ho99o9, surprise showings by Jidenna and Alicia Keys in sets by Goldlink and Tierra Whack, and a jaw-dropping performance by FKA twigs, who closed out the weekend leaving the audience of over 60,000 attendees completely spellbound. By bringing the energy of punk rock together with the poetry of Afrofuturism. in 2019, Afropunk seems to have once again found its voice.
