Soccer Mommy shared an occult-inspired new track, "Lucy" today along with a hypnotizing lyric video. It's frontwoman Sophie Allison's first release of new music since last year's critically-acclaimed Clean, and marks a major shift in the singer-songwriter's sound.
"Lucy," a distorted, electric guitar-heavy song, features evocative lyrics about dancing with the devil, or a dude with "the face of an angel," and the "heart of something less nice." In a statement, Allison elaborated on the song's eerie, gothic elements, which differ from her past lovestruck offerings.
"'Lucy' is a really fun song for me because it has a dark, evil vibe," Allison said, "It's a song about struggling with inner demons and your own morality, but I masked it with this scenario of being seduced by the devil. I'm really excited to share this with everyone because I think it shows a different side of my writing."
Allison and her band are currently supporting Vampire Weekend on the North American leg of their Father of the Bride fall tour. They are set to open for Wilco in a string of five performances next month. "Lucy" is now available to stream but will also be released as a limited-edition 7'' vinyl via Loma Vista Recordings later this year.
So, who's ready for spooky season? Allison certainly is, calling her new single a "demonic bop" online. We couldn't agree more. Stream "Lucy," below.
