Rodarte Wants to Suck Your Blood

Since decamping from NYFW a few seasons ago, Rodarte went on to show in Paris before settling down in LA and leaving the runway altogether in favor of lookbooks. (Who could forget the Spring 2020 lookbook featuring Mad Men's Betty and Sally Draper?)

For Fall 2020, however, Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy returned to the New York calendar and staged a dazzling show that riffed on the brand's signature romantic sensibility while incorporating some darker, menacing themes like Dracula-inspired makeup and silhouettes. (They staged the show inside the historic St. Bartholomew's Church on Park Avenue.)

The gothic Vampire mood (black hooded capes, dark lipstick, spider web embroideries) was offset by Valentine's Day-ready details like heart motifs and rose adornments. The tension between sweet and sinister resulted in a collection that sparked fantasy and whimsy while staying grounded in reality.

But not before the Mulleavy sisters gave us one more thing to dream about: a show-stopping finale gown with an elaborate floral headpiece, sweetheart neckline, puff shoulders and long swooping train. It was a reminder of how great it was to have Rodarte in New York, and here's hoping they let their dark romantic imaginations run wild here again next season.
