Infinite Coles Kicks Down Doors With 'Boots'
By Ivan Guzman
Aug 02, 2024Infinite Coles is feeling himself. He deserves it, too. The NYC-born singer and performer has been making a name for himself around the city and on streaming platforms for years now, his silky and lush R&B voice gracing tracks that felt both intimate and eccentric. But recently, Coles, who is notably the son of Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ghostface Killah, has experienced a transformation.
“This is the real me,” he tells PAPER. Since having to live in a shelter for a year and not being able to belt freely, Coles finally has his own place and can sing whenever, and however, he wants. “I can finally belt as loud as I want without anyone saying ‘Shut up!’ or ‘Close the door!’ Being in my own home has helped me express myself lyrically in ways I’ve never expressed.”
In comes his new track, “Boots.” It’s a Ballroom-inspired vogue number that features Coles more confident and effervescent than ever before. “Where’s my boots so I can eat a bitch?” he ponders on the '90s House hook. In the single promo, Coles stands in a black latex number, exaggerated black cap, and holding a life-sized metallic fork and knife. After struggling with his identity as a child of hip-hop royalty and New York creative, Coles is hungry and ready to eat.
There’s no doubt that he’s eating, for sure. Below, we sit down with Coles to talk about the struggle, newfound clarity and his favorite boots.
What are your favorite boots right now? And what have been some of your iconic boots in the past?
To be honest, I haven’t really had my iconic pair of boots yet. I’m still waiting for them to come into my life, but as for my favorite boots... I know these might be dated, but I really love the Balenciaga Chevalier boots! Ugh, they’re so iconic and I live for the medieval knight vibe. I also will forever love the Rick Owens flared platform boots. Those are one of my favorites. I'm such a boot girl so there are so many to choose from.
This track is a bit different from your previous work, which was a little more R&B-focused. Tell me about what inspired you to do this and about this new journey you’re on.
Oh baby, this is the real me! This is the music I wanna make. This is the sound that feels right to my heart. I will forever be an R&B girl, but I’ve realized that I am way more than that. I love to dance. I love to vogue. Also, being at a point where I finally have my own place after living in a shelter has helped me grow as an artist and a human. I can finally belt as loud as I want without anyone saying shut up or close the door. Being in my own home has helped me express myself lyrically in ways I’ve never expressed. Before that I was trying to make music for everyone and that’s where I messed up on my last project. It blocked me from speaking my full truth and from being my authentic self. I now realize when I make music it has to be for me and nothing else. I have to love it and I need to make the music that I want to hear and the people that get it get it. This new journey has honestly been a rollercoaster, but I’m proud of myself. I’m so proud of my growth.
Why should people be excited about Infinite Coles?
People should be excited because I have found my sound. I’ve been through so much the past few years, from living in a shelter for 11 months to having to help raise a child who I love so much, and that is the reason why I’m fighting extra hard. I am not the person I was before I went into that shelter. I’ve grown and learned so much about myself during that time and it made me stronger, more focused, more fearless. I’m so sure everyone will love this new project. It’s so real and authentic, and it’s everything I am.
You’ve talked about the struggles of finding your own identity as a child of Wu-Tang. Where are you at right now with that identity exploration, and what do you see the fully formed Infinite Coles being like?
Right now I feel so kunt! I feel a beautiful change coming. I feel grateful, and I feel so sure about everything. I’m not worried about other people’s thoughts or worried about being judged. I get so much more from the universe when I’m completely being me. The fully formed Infinite will be a star in the next two years. The fully formed Infinite will be so secure with himself and so in love with himself. The fully formed Infinite will leave a mark on this world. The fully formed Infinite will be taking care of and providing for his family, especially his daughter/niece.
What’s the craziest dream you had recently?
I had a dream about my mom recently. In the dream she was so old and had long grey hair down to her ankles. It was so beautiful, but it was also giving witch vibes. Not sure what it meant, but I didn’t really like seeing my mom older because it makes me think about how much time I have left with her. When I woke up, I felt like I had to pray and maybe call my mom to say ‘I love you.’ It’s always good to make sure you tell your loved ones how much you love them. Some people need to be reminded and that’s okay. Love is love, and it feels amazing to be loved.
What can we expect from you for the rest of 2024?
No more breaks and more and more hits! This new album is so good. It's probably my best work yet. I plan on really popping out this year and next.
