Song of the week: Lady Gaga - "Zombieboy"
Lady Gaga's Mayhem album isn't quite as chaotic as its title would suggest – and its lead singles certainly painted a different impression of what the album would end up being. But there are gems to be found among the album's sleazy '80s funk, namely "Zombieboy," which sounds like a long-lost '80s New York club classic. Gaga puts on her best Debbie Harry drag and invites freaks of all stripes to come dance – a classic Gaga trope done in a new style for her.
Jennie, Dua Lipa - "Handlebars"
"Handlebars” taps into the loose, soulful vein that animates Jennie’s long-awaited debut album Ruby — the Korean superstar’s voice intertwining perfectly with Dua Lipa’s husky timbre.
Doechii - "Anxiety"
Doechii has given an official release to this Gotye and Kimbra-sampling loosie from a few years back, which shows off her rich singing voice as well as her plaintive, distinctive rapping.
Car Seat Headrest - "Gethsemane"
Will Toledo introduces his new album The Scholars with – what else? – an 11-minute prog odyssey that builds to a sweeping, fiery finale.
Yeule - "Skullcrusher"
Yeule taps into a kind of mutated, time-worn dub on “Skullcrusher”, a simmering cut from their new album. Think Portishead if they were making music in 2050.
SoFTT - "Cerca Al Cielo"
SoFTT make some of the most euphoric club music going, and “Cerca Al Cielo” feels ready-made to soundtrack endless beach vacations and on-a-whim road trips. Summer can’t come fast enough.
Black Country New Road - "Happy Birthday"
The newest Black Country, New Road singles have been limber and loose, and “Happy Birthday” is a delight – a freewheeling folk track that channels Hunky Dory-era Bowie.
The Tubs - "The Thing Is"
“The Thing Is”, which opens The Tubs’ great new album Cotton Crown, feels of a piece with classic 80s and 90s jangle – a bright, bucolic pop song anchored by acoustic guitar and emphatic vocals.
GFOTY - "Hidden Gem"
GFOTY in ballad mode? It’s more likely than you think, and still as unpredictable as you’d expect.
Lady Gaga - "How Bad Do U Want Me"
Gaga samples Yaz on this other highlight from Mayhem, which also sounds, amazingly, like Taylor Swift. It’s just as spacey and catchy as you’d expect.
