Sound Off: 10 Songs You Need to Hear Now
By Shaad D'Souza
Aug 23, 2024
It's impossible to be across all the new music out each Friday. Luckily, PAPER is here to help you out: each week, we round up 10 of our favorite new songs from artists — emerging and established — to soundtrack your life. From the surreal to the sublime, these songs cover every corner of the music world. The only criteria: they all have to absolutely rip.
Subscribe to our Sound Off Spotify playlist here and check out this week's tracks, below.
Sabrina Carpenter - "Taste"
The uproarious opener of Sabrina Carpenter’s sixth album Short ’n’ Sweet is a cheeky, rock-inflected kiss-off to an ex’s new girlfriend, punctuated by a winking joke: “I know I’ve been known to share!”
Caroline Says - "Faded and Golden"
I’ve been holed up all summer listening to Caroline Says’ brilliant 2019 track “Smoke and Mirrors.” “Faded and Golden” is similar in title structure only, but it’s still gorgeous: a malleable country track that radiates wisdom and warmth.
Magdalene - "Delusional"
Formerly known as Your Angel, Magdalene returns with “Delusional,” a 2010s-aping pop track produced by Model/Actriz’s Cole Haden that captures the era’s contrast of gothy production and inspirational melody.
Amyl and The Sniffers - "Chewing Gum"
Amyl and the Sniffers’ latest single “Chewing Gum” isn’t as emotionally aggressive or defiant as most of the songs on their (really great) forthcoming third album Cartoon Darkness, but it has its place: it’s nice to remember that “life is short, life is fun.”
Fontaines D.C. - "Death Kink"
“Death Kink” is the song on Fontaines D.C.’s new album Romance that most resembles the swaggering post-punk of their earlier records and it’s a pummelling highlight, frontman Grian Chatten chronicling a toxic relationship with typical aloofness.
Molina, ML Buch - "Organs"
Danish-Chilean producer Molina links up with the brilliant Danish musician ML Buch on “Organs,” which adds some skewiff heft to Buch’s typically weightless compositions. Suntub summer, baby!
Magdalena Bay - "That's My Floor"
Pop-vaporwave purveyors Magdalena Bay dip into squelchy 80s kitsch on “That’s My Floor,” which perfectly captures their madcap approach to style.
Fcuckers - "Tommy"
Personally, I think it’s pretty ha-ha funny and true to the era they’re aping that Fcukers have been accused of dishonesty (later corrected!) by the press. And this song, a heady mix of Gang Gang Dance vocals, deep house and freestyle claps, is great too!
Mk.gee - "Lonely Fight"
Mk.gee – aka ML Buch for dudes – returns after a huge surge in popularity with this plaintive, soul-inflected track, his purest R&B look to date.
Pixel Grip - "Stamina"
Fun, campily dark electro-punk from Chicago trio Pixel Grip – and it even comes with a club edit in case that pounding beat wasn’t hard enough for you.
