It looks like Bong Joon-Ho will be drinking a lot tonight! Parasitemade history as the very first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film also won the Best Screenplay and Best International Film categories. And director Bong Joon-Ho also bagged the title of Best Director, beating Hollywood legends — filmmakers he's admired his whole life — Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese.
These awards are also the very first Oscars ever received by South Korea, and are a huge milestone for foreign filmmakers everywhere.
"After winning best international feature, I thought I was done for the day and was ready to relax," Bong said, in shock after he won the directorial category. "When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is that 'the most personal is the most creative.' That quote is from our great Martin Scorsese. When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese's films. Just to be nominated was a huge honor. I never thought I would win."
"When people in the U.S. were not familiar with my films, Quentin always put my films on his list. He's here, thank you so much. Quentin, I love you. And Todd and Sam, great directors that I admire." The Oscar Award winner joked, "If the Academy allows, I would like to get a Texas chainsaw, split the award into five and share it with all of you."
He concluded his speech with the perfect statement: "Thank you. I will drink until next morning, thank you."
History has been made, and hopefully Hollywood is forever changed for the better. Now, if only more women would get recognized for their work and artistry in films.
