COBRAH Is Coming for Blood
By Ivan Guzman
Aug 01, 2024On “FEMININE ENERGY,” COBRAH is King. The new video from the underground electropop vixen, which premieres today on PAPER, is an intensely sensual strobe-lit stunner of a visual that features female weightlifters curling dumbbells and posing oiled-up in muscle-hugging bikinis.
“I used to lift heavy weights when I wrote the song, so doing something that is actual feminine energy felt so given in a way,” COBRAH says. The video, which features a remix of the track by hyper-techno faerie Zorza, is an eye-candy addition to the dark latex universe that COBRAH created with her 2023 EP SUCCUBUS.
The newly released SUCCUBUS XXXTENDED remix project takes that high-energy momentum to the next level. It’s dark and sure of itself, as all of the artist’s creative outputs tend to be. For COBRAH, pumping up a sweaty, packed club at 4 AM just comes naturally.
We caught up with COBRAH to chat about where this feminine energy came from, touring and the steamy new video.
You recently released SUCCUBUS XXXTENDED. What has been the fan reception thus far?
The fans have been so wild for it, and I’m just so impressed by the amazing artists that I have on the record. It’s true icons and literal legends only.
I know you’ve played some shows for SUCCUBUS, including a sold-out stop in Brooklyn. How was that gig — what was the fan energy like?
That gig was the gig of a lifetime for me. I still can’t believe it really happened. I just remember going on stage and having this overwhelming feeling of: This is happening, this is truly the biggest moment in my life. The crowd was raving. We really made it a club night to remember. What was the inspiration behind your “Feminine Energy” video, and how did you bring the concept to life?
I’ve had this idea for about two or three years, but the concept didn’t really fit within the SUCCUBUS world. Now, when we’re doing remixes, I feel like I can explore other worlds. It’s the perfect opportunity to change things up. I used to lift heavy weights when I wrote the song and was really into weightlifting during that time, so doing something that is actual feminine energy felt so given in a way.
How do you want listeners to feel when they see the video for “Feminine Energy"?
Hot and sweaty, like they can’t wait to lift a big-ass tractor tire in a bikini!
What does “feminine energy” mean to you?
Feminine energy is that feeling inside of being a force in the world, a feminine sexy force that’s on the way to do great things.
What are you excited to share with fans next?
Ooh, I’m back in the studio now, which is very fun, and I can’t say too much, but I’ll be back very soon.
