Walking up to Detroit's Majestic Theater, a line of girls in oversized suits stand waiting, their nervous energy palpable. Eyes filled with a mix of awe and desire hover near the entrance, but they don't stand a chance against the thick, imposing security guard stationed at the door. My instructions are clear: Meet me at the back door, behind the tour bus.
Inside the green room, 070 Shake is perched on a couch, glass of wine in hand. There’s a quiet intensity to her — she carries herself with the tough exterior of someone who’s seen too much, yet she radiates an underlying warmth. The room is buzzing with conversations about art, growth and what this generation demands from its idols. Shake listens as much as she speaks, absorbing the energy like a sponge.
Her show later that night is nothing short of mesmerizing — a hypnotic blend of raw poetry and unfiltered emotion, mysterious in a way that make you lean in closer. On-stage, 070 Shake is unfettered — no disguises, no theatrics — just raw, unshaken authenticity. There’s something magnetic about the way she performs, seamlessly shifting between ethereal melodies and gut-punch verses. She lights a cigarette mid-set, a small act of rebellion that feels more like a ritual than a performance trick.
Her latest album, Petrichor, is a testament to this duality: soft yet cutting, introspective yet commanding. The soundscape feels like a lucid dream, drenched in synth-heavy nostalgia but tethered to the present by Shake’s unmistakable voice. Tracks like “Lungs” and “Into Your Garden” hit like journal entries set to pulsating beats. "Blue Velvet," from her second studio album, is so entrancing it takes you someplace else — a pause in time, a poetic tribute to love.
As the night wraps, she stayed true to form — no grand exit, no ego, just gratitude. “I appreciate you,” she tells the crowd, her voice firm yet delicate. It’s this unwavering honesty that cements 070 Shake as one of the most compelling voices of her generation. No gimmicks, no personas — just her.
