Liz Phair Returns With Debut Memoir and First New Single in 9 Years

by Lorena Caro

Liz Phair is back in a big way. The trailblazing '90s singer-songwriter first captured hearts within a male-dominated indie rock scene. Exile In Guyville, Phair's seminal 1993 debut was recorded with Brad Wood, who would go on to record her follow-up albums, 1994's Whip Smart and 1998's whitechocolatespaceegg.

Today, Phair releases "Good Side," a song from her upcoming album, set to be released in 2020. It's Phair's first track since July 2010, when she released her sixth album, Funstyle. For her new album, Phair reunited with Wood, who produced what's to come — a nostalgic take on their previous work. According to an interview for Stereogum, "'Good Side' captures the optimism and acceptance [Phair] feels even in the face of disappointments."

Phair also releases her first book today, a memoir called Horror Stories, based on the ups and downs of her life as an iconic rock star. Read an excerpt of the book here, and buy it here.

Listen to "Good Side" here. It'll be available on streaming services October 11. Revisit Phair's Exile In Guyville 25th anniversary box set, complete with her original Girly-Sound demos, below:
