Brandon Maxwell Had His Very Own Cheering Squad

Story by Mario Abad / Photography by Hatnim Lee

After the first model walked out at Brandon Maxwell's Fall 2020 show, loud cheers exploded from a small section of the audience nearby. Guests began turning their heads to see what all the commotion was about.

Turns out all the hollering was led by Lexi Brumback and Gabi Butler, the two stars from Netflix's new show Cheers who were wearing their Navarro College cheerleader uniforms. They encouraged others around them to join in on the clapping and praise, a welcome upbeat relief from fashion's usual stoic guests.

There was another cause for celebration, as well. It was announced that the American Museum of Natural History, which is where Maxwell staged his show (the first ever held in the Hall of North American Mammals), would feature Maxwell's red finale gown for its upcoming exhibition on the nature of color.

As for the clothes, Maxwell continued with the elegant daywear bent he explored last season, as well as the addition of more menswear looks. His fixation on classic American sportswear — luxe suiting, shearling coats, dark indigo denim — was offset by some alluring chiffon evening dresses that flowed and swayed as the models walked.
