'Maisel' Star Alex Borstein's Latest Look Is a Vintage Throwback

by Trishna Rikhy

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is widely known for its characters’ impeccable vintage fashion — and off-screen, stars of the show are pulling off some equally stylish (and archival) looks.

Alex Borstein (AKA Susie Myerson, Midge Maisel’s no-funny-business-but-still-hilarious manager) recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in a vintage St. John black and pink knit dress from the ‘80s. The best part? Borstein’s look didn’t come from a stylist’s archives, but instead, from her mother’s closet.

“I’ve always dressed myself for events and red carpets,” Borstein wrote for Glamour in 2019. “I’ve never done a stylist because I don’t want to deal with that feeling of trying things and quickly realizing they’re not meant for me.”

Worn with strappy black heels and dangly earrings, the retro look is a nod to St. John’s Fall 2022 collection by Zoe Turner, which also bears pink, blazer-style mini dresses with wide lapels.

The Golden Globe winner started her own fashion label, Henabee’s, in 2019 as a DIY means of fixing her own red carpet fashion troubles when it came to sleeveless dresses. On-screen, Borstein’s character is known for her abrasive attitude and being commonly mistaken for a man; off-screen, the actress is known for anything but a lack of fashion sense, whether she’s wearing her own wedding dress to the Emmys in 2018 or putting her mother’s vintage St. John in the spotlight.
