The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, are getting out of the palace and starting their new lives independent from the rest of the British Royal fam. And while the initial announcement seemed like it was a done and easy deal, there are, of course, consequences to the Sussex's decision. With a new statement, the Queen reveals what "Megxit" means for Harry, Meghan, and baby Archie.
Her Majesty herself, and not just Buckingham Palace, issued a letter to the public. "Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family," she says in the statement posted on the Royal Family's official website. "I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life."
"I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family." She continues, "It is my whole family's hope that today's agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life."
Buckingham Palace's separate statement specifies that the Sussexes will no longer receive public funding, and will become financially independent as they wish as they will no longer be performing Royal duties or formally representing the Queen. And because of this, they will also be stripped of their "His/Her Royal Highness" titles.
According to the palace, Harry and Meghan have also decided by themselves to repay the money they spent from the Sovereign Grant for the renovation of their official residence, Frogmore Cottage, which CNN reports cost around $3 million (£2.4 million). Buckingham says that the cottage "will remain their UK family home."
The official statement ends, "This new model will take effect in the Spring of 2020."
Though $3 million (and then some) seems like a steep price to pay for independence, the Sussexes probably have a plan in place. In terms of funding their charitable efforts, Meg has already been rumored to partner with Disney to raise funds for Elephants Without Boarders.
