Universal Pictures' Gay Dilemma

Peter Davis

Today is National Coming Out Day and New York Governor hopeful Carl Paladino just told a Brooklyn Hasidic congregation that kids shouldn't be "brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option. It isn't." What a loser. Additionally, GLAAD  is blasting a "Call to Action" against the Universal Pictures movie The Dilemma which features Vince Vaughn using the word "gay" as an insult in its trailer. The (lame-looking) comedy is directed by Ron Howard (weird) and though they've removed it from trailers, Universal has said they won't remove the scene from the film which comes out in January. I am not a politically correct freak (all the time), but it gets tiring when mainstream movies and media use the word "gay" like schoolyard bullies to mean something negative. And we know all too well that bullying can lead to gay teens killing themselves. Hollywood would not exist without gays and Ron Howard should know better. "When 'gay' is used as a pejorative in such a public way for millions to see and laugh with, it legitimizes and propels the many taunts that gay people endure,"says GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios. "Amidst a rash of bullying related suicides and anti-gay hate crimes, we need to tell Universal and America that our community is tired of being used as a punch line."
