Marcus Carl Franklin didn't know who Bob Dylan was before he read the script for I'm Not There, the Todd Haynes film in which seven different actors portray the legendary singer/songwriter. And while it may be hard to imagine anyone not knowing at least Bob Dylan's name, Franklin is, after all, only 14 years old. When Dylan was at the peak of his career, Franklin's parents were probably just barely legal. That said, this groovy kid with the dope Afro, who started acting when he was four, clearly did his homework for the film. "If you've ever seen actual footage [of Dylan], it's surreal," says Franklin, with casual honesty. "He's singing right from his heart." Franklin's character, "The Fake," who travels around the country calling himself Woody Guthrie, is a charismatic young drifter who "embodies" Dylan, but loves Guthrie. Franklin describes the experience of acting out the role as being almost visceral: "When I come on that train [in the film's first scene] just so full of energy, I feel that Dylan presence," he says, moving his hand in a slow circle over his chest.
Franklin, whose dad is a police officer and whose mom takes him to auditions and
"hangs out with me," landed his first acting gig in a bank commercial, and "I
just loved it so much I wanted to keep doing it." Since then, his brag sheet
also includes TV (Lackawanna Blues for HBO) and stage (Caroline, or Change).
Born and still living in Mahopac, New York, Franklin attends public school when
he's not working, a situation about which he is decidedly not precious: "As long
as I get to hang out with my friends, go to the pool and whatnot, I'm straight."
Straight, no chaser.
