TWELVE AND HOLDING
Michael Cuesta, who directed the terrific L.I.E., is back with more fucked-up kids in this dark comedy about three 12-year-olds who are catapulted into adulthood when tragedy strikes. Jacob (Conor Donovan) has always been protected by his twin brother Rudy. When a neighborhood bully kills Rudy, Jacob's response is to visit the boy responsible at the juvenile detention center and threaten him. Malee (Zoe Weizenbaum) becomes dangerously fixated on a patient (Jeremy Renner) of her psychiatrist mother (Annabella Sciorra). And corpulent Leonard (Jesse Camacho) begins to eat more healthfully when an accident removes his ability to taste. The plot twists will make you squirm, worrying about the outcome. Fortunately Cuesta's viewpoint is compassionate as well as cracked.
