Despite some vocal dissent from leading fashion designers, future First Lady Melania Trump can count on Tommy Hilfiger to be in her gold-encrusted corner.
Attending last night's Angel Ball at Cipriani Wall Street, the garment icon responded specifically to one of Michelle Obama's favorite designers, Sophie Theallet, and her viral open letter to the fashion world to boycott Melania for the bigotry surrounding her husband's campaign and current pre-administration.
He seemed to take a simple, superficial route about dressing Mrs. Trump (and her stepdaughter, Ivanka).
I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her. Ivanka is equally as beautiful and smart, although she wears her own clothes. I don't think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle [Obama] as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You're not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.
It might be easy for Mr. Hilfiger to not get political, but for the rest of us mortals, we can't exactly afford that--figuratively and physically.
