Open on Friday at The Film Forum is Robert Altman's dazzling 1973 neo-noir The Long Goodbye, and itâs one Altmanâs best. Based on a Raymond Chandler book, Elliot Gould is perfect as the hipster gumshoe detective traversing a sleazy slize of L.A. in the 1970s. The film also stars Nina Van Pallandt (famous then for her connection to Clifford Irving, now brought to film in The Hoax), Sterling Hayden as a boozing writer and Mark Rydell as an oily gangster (whose act of violence to his girlfriend still makes audiences gasp)
A bust at the box office at the time, another example of a movie âtoo hip for the room," but just perfection. And that ending!!!!
