Here is an ingenious, awesome monster movie by Toby Wilkins about a mutating porcupine-cactus creature that traps a group of people in an isolated gas station where they are left to fight for their lives. Paulo Costanzo plays Seth, a biologist on holiday with his girlfriend Polly (Jill Wagner), and Shea Whigham plays a criminal-on-the-run stranded with them. Wilkins, formally a visual effects man, has crafted the morphing monster in ways reminiscent of Rob Bottin’s work on The Thing. But it’s the economy and freshness to this material that makes this suspenseful, first-rate fright-flick work so sensationally.
