Street photographer Jamel Shabazz is being honored with a new exhibition of his work at Hardhitta Gallery in Cologne. The iconic photographer, previously the subject of a Charlie Ahearn documentary, has been cataloging New York City's various vibes for 40 years, capturing the essence of hip-hop and street style since the 80s. “All too often my work is misinterpreted, they look at it and they just see urban culture and hip hop in the African American community," says Shabazz in a press release. "But it’s more broad than that, it's a universal body of work about compassion, empathy, bringing out the beauty within people and the love that bridges the gaps between us.” See the exuberant photos from the German exhibition, Jamel Shabazz: Reflections From the 80s, below.
