Rocket Science

This sweet and skewed dark comedy by Jeffrey Blitz (Spellbound) is about a tortured teen named Hal Hefner (Reece Daniel Thompson) who has a severe stuttering problem that makes high school in Plainsboro, New Jersey, a living hell. That is, until Ginny Ryerson (Anna Kendrick), a pretty, motormouthed dynamo takes him under her wing, convinced he has potential to join her on the debate team. Hal falls hopelessly in love with her, ignoring the insanity of this endeavor. The ramshackle quality of the comedy and the flashes of grotesque humor make the messiness of adolescent anguish come achingly to life. And the peripheral characters are so disturbingly off-kilter one imagines director Blitz (who admits the film includes autobiographical elements) coloring and shading what were most likely painful memories. That’s sweet revenge in its own right. Rocket Science is unusual and really quite wonderful.
