Two years ago, the PERFORMA festival brought underage barbers, Baptist revivals, rooftop hula hoopers, and other performers to venues throughout Manhattan. Two years before that, PERFORMA provided the aegis for Marina Abramovic to "cover" seven classic performance pieces. This November, the biennial festival of performed visual art, a brainchild of art historian RoseLee Goldberg, returns with over a hundred artists in over sixty venues, including Mike Kelley's demonic pep rally at Judson Church and Omer Fast's game of theatrical telephone. The whole thing kicks off November 1 with a multidisciplinary arts parade down Fifth Avenue masterminded by No Wave legend Arto Lindsay to coincide with the New York Marathon. PERFORMA is sure to be the art event of the fall.
