Opening this week is The Informant! Matt Damon is quite good as the pudgy, mustached Mark Whitacre, an executive for agri-industry corporation, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), who becomes an FBI informant about his company’s price-fixing practice. Eager and giddy in his role as spy he loudly announces (while wired) when he enters a building and calls himself 0014 “because I’m twice as good as 007”. Unfortunately the FBI doesn’t realize what a loose cannon and a liability Whitacre actually is. Based on a true story, director Steven Soderbergh keeps the tone light and breezy, with a jaunty score by Marvin Hamlisch, and goofy voiceovers by Damon regurgitating interesting factoids he has been collecting in his head. The story itself is bizarrely funny, and Damon amusingly inhabits this pathological oddball.
