Nirvana's legendary "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the official anthem of Generation X, just turned 25 years old. According to the folklore of the Pacific Northwest, Kurt Cobain came up with the title after the lead singer Bikini Kill, Kathleen Hanna wrote "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall (remember writing stuff on walls?). He thought she was being deep, but she was literally referring to Teen Spirit deodorant. And thus, grunge was born, flannel, coffee, etc...

For many people, hearing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time represents a significant moment of recognition, because the song so perfectly voices the angst/rage/nihilism felt by social misfits, outsiders, and middle schoolers. They hear the music of Nirvana, and they say, "This is me." Some of them pick up guitars, some of them start writing poetry, some of them write 'Nirvana' on their Converse and call it a day, and some of them, well, some of them figure skate...
