Many fabulous looks made their way to this year's Oscars red carpet. Billy Porter stunned in a couture piece by Giles Deacon, Spike Lee paid tribute to the late Kobe Bryant using a purple suit with the number 24, and Billie Eilish was dripping with her Chanel suit. But Natalie Portman made quite the impression with her Dior cape, and not because of anything flashy.
In fact, her fashion statement was a very subtle feminist nod. Embroidered on the lining of her cape were the names of the female directors who weren't nominated at the 92nd Academy Awards: Lulu Wang, Alma Har'el Greta Gerwig, Lorene Scafaria, Melina Matsoukas, Marielle Heller, Mari Diop and Céline Sciamma
"I wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year in a subtle way," she explained in a clip shared by The Los Angeles Times' Amy Kaufman.
This year, the nominees for the best director category are Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Todd Phillips for Joker, Sam Mendes for 1917, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Bong Joon Ho for Parasite.

The snubbing of women didn't go unnoticed. Aside from Portman, the actors and performers who went up on stage — like Janelle Monàe, Steve Martin and Chris Rock — made sure to call out the Academy for their failure to recognize female artists.
