In time for the ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) MoMA Design Store is doling out function-meets-cute with Destination: Japan, a line of everyday objects re-imagined by a country obsessed with kwaii (yes, cute). One of the highlights among kitchen knickknacks (ginger grater, oven mitts, potato peeler, sake set) and household tchotchkes (a squid memory stick -- my favorite -- vases, scissors, erasers) are the little mochi guys (on the right) exclusively made for MoMA by Kid Robot and Devilrobots. They are of course limited-edition collectible toys. The only downside to these colorful $10-a-pop, tear-droppy blobs with punch-hole black eyes and piggly snouts is that they're not edible. Thinking of mochi makes us hungry!
