Minnie Mortimer Brings a Dash of Malibu to a Cold, Cold NYC

Designer Minnie Mortimer is one of our favorite bi-coastal cuties. Last night she showed her ready-to-wear fall 2010 collection and it was filled with her signature cute, preppy and comfy classics. We spoke to Minnie this morning via email about bloomers, lacquered furniture and weather-appropriate packing.

What was the inspiration for this collection?
The collection is very personal -- it's really about what clothes I want for myself right now -- very, very selfish I know! The thing that inspires me most are holes in my own closet and pieces I want for my day -- I live in Malibu but grew up in NYC. And the mix of those two looks is my favorite.  I love California skate and surf culture but I always return home to city life and that really informs the looks too.

Where would you wear the adorable bloomers?
With a matching tight to create a monochromatic look. I like them to wear out at night -- cocktail parties, dinners.  I find them playful.  Without a tight and a flat for the day/weekend.

You love to shop at flea markets. Do you look for certain things or you're open to anything?
I am open to anything from vintage jewelry to furniture I rehab and lacquer.  Prints, frames I love it all. I find editing the junk so satisfying -- it has become a compulsion.

There's a blizzard today. Did you bring warm enough clothes from Malibu?

I went to the airport super early this morning and hopped on the last flight out before they closed JFK! Was too freaked out by the "20 inch snowfall warning"  En route now. Will be in sunny La La Land in a few hours.
