Max Mara, the Italian label founded in the 1950s, is by nature a brand that focuses on luxury outerwear. And that it did for its fall 2019 collection. However, the inspiration behind it may have been more unexpected. Nancy Pelosi, who wore a bold red power coat by the brand to the important December 2018 meeting with Trump over the border wall, was on the mood board of Max Mara creative director Ian Griffiths. Monochromatic Brights
Max Mara opened the collection with a trio of women in unconventionally cool colors such as turquoise, cobalt blue and yellow. Sweaters were styled over blazers for a cozy look, but knee-high boots elevated the look.
Animal Prints
There were plenty of animal prints that made their debut midway through the collection. Chunky zebra and giraffe print sweaters were layered over little shift dresses and black turtlenecks.
Sand Is the New Black
A plethora of sandy hued pieces made their way down the catwalk after the initial bold colors. There was something super sophisticated about the coloration — they were not quite cream, not quite off-white, but just right.
Blanket Dressing
The message beyond the political inspiration seemed to be dressing in layers. Sweaters were styled over jackets, cape-like coats worn over sweaters, blazers under coats; their lapels sticking out. It all looked very comfortable and a much more chic alternative to donning a blanket scarf.
The Future of Handbags
In London, we saw the trend of wearing your dainty handbag around your neck emerge at Erdem. At Max Mara, the label positioned structural, embossed bags around models' necks. There were also large, utilitarian pockets on garments, offering up a new alternative to the completely eliminating the classic handbag.
