The crowning conclusion to South Korean master Chan-wook Park's revenge trilogy, which began with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and continued with Oldboy (2003). Lee Young-ae stars as Lee Geum-ja, a woman who is released from jail after a 13-year sentence for brutally slaying a child. She gets a job at a bakery and rounds up her old fellow female inmates to help her cook up a massive campaign of revenge on the person really responsible for the murder. Toward the end, there's a big shift in the narrative -- the film transforms into a dark fairy tale where villagers take on an ogre that torments them. The score is lush, with Vivaldi to offset the violence, and the movie reaches a dizzying finale of rapturous retribution -- and, yes, even grace.
