Kristen Schaal on Her Sexy New Book and Being "Miranda July to People Without HBO"

Ming Fearon

Generally speaking, dating your co-worker can be tricky ground to maneuver. Comedians Kristen Schaal and Rich Blomquist, who both work on The Daily Show and are a couple, are happily proving this theory wrong. They're also writing hilarious books along the way.\ Blomquist, a writer on the show, and Schaal, the show's "Senior Women's Issues Commentator," joined comedic forces to put together The Sexy Book of Sexy Sex, a hilarious, tongue-in-cheek manual that (if you couldn't guess) covers sex in some of the most eclectic ways imaginable. Schaal and Blomquist hosted a "sextravaganza" launch party for their book last night at Spin New York, where people drank cocktails while hitting balls all over the room. Ping-pong balls. Get your mind out of the gutter.

Schaal, who is also known for her role as crazy fan Mel on Flight of the Conchords, took a minute from entertaining to talk with us about her sexy book.

Congrats on the book! Was there an ah-ha moment that made you realize The Sexy Book of Sexy Sex needed to come into existence?

Well, I have mostly sex jokes in my standup so it was an easy parley into a book. And I felt, I have such a great sexual connection with Rich... why not take pleasure in writing a book that allows us to pleasure ourselves at the same time?

Gross! This is a pretty bawdy book. What did your mother think of it?

I gave her a copy, she was... impressed... by how much information was in it and the effort we put into it. Some parts were funny to her, but of course she had to skip some pages.

Now that you're a published author, is there anything else you're working on?

Well, I'm working on a few TV shows... but I'm not going to get too much into that in case they, you know, don't actually work out.

Inside the book jacket you describe yourself as "simply a Miranda July-look-alike to people who don't have HBO." Do you really get compared to her a lot?

Yeah! Just the other day I was in Venice and I was chased down by a woman, she was knocking on my car window and she said, "I loved you in Me and You and Everyone We Know!" Miranda July is amazing, though; of all the people to be compared to, she's a great one.
