Jil Sander Is Doing Just Fine Without Jil Sander

Since taking the reins at Jil Sander two years ago, power couple Luke and Lucie Meier have managed to honor the founder's minimalist legacy while adding their own unique sensibilities to the Italian luxury brand. For Spring 2020, the designers championed a warmer mood, with personal touches and flourishes like raffia fringe and soothing prints. That tension between hard and soft was seen in various looks, with fluid tunics and bias-cut dresses worn with sharp tailoring in a black and white palette.

The Meiers no doubt have plenty of ideas and design cues to work with from their years of experience in houses as diverse as Supreme and Dior. A lot of those concepts can also be found in the brand's Jil Sander+ line. (The brand's store on Via Sant'Andrea in Milan is currently being used as a site of monthly installations, and Jil Sander+ down jackets and puffer coats make up the first exhibition.) Here's everything else you need to know about the collection.

Painterly Swirls

Although not exactly known for their prints, this season the Meiers injected some abstract artistic elements through colorful patterns and marble prints.

Fringe Fantastic

Raffia fringe decorated shirts and dresses in a home-spun, crafty manner. It also formed an entire floor-length dress in a muted cream color.

Simple Lines

The brand's signature minimalist essence was still the basis of the collection, with a black and white palette seen on bias-cut dresses and fluid gowns.

Hard/Soft

This season was also all about balance, with hard and soft, fluid/structured elements playing out in sharp tailoring over soft dresses and tunics.

Patchwork Proper

The crafty touch was also seen in patchwork patterns, but done in the Jil Sander way of smart precision and cut. Bold graphic lines (like the brown and black striped number) also counter-played the softer elements.
