That high-pitched noise that sounds like a million hyenas keening you hear this morning is the collective wailing of a bunch of pre-teens who just heard the news that One Direction might be breaking up.
Though they've valiantly tried to prove to the world that they're "totally doing fine, guys" after Zayn left the group (Exhibit A: their "Drag Me Down" video), a source told The Sun that starting in March, they'll take "an extended hiatus of at least a year to pursue solo projects." But before everyone starts breaking out the prayer candles and creating shrines to Harry, Louis, Niall and Liam, the source goes on to insist that "it is definitely not a split and they fully intend to get back together at some time in the future." But maybe those words are just a cushion to soften the blow because this same source later says "but for now it is the end and they go out on top as the world's most popular music act."
In the meantime, though, fans can content themselves with 1D's forthcoming album, which will be out in time for the holidays.
