Henrik Vibskov Is Our Shop of the Week

Luigi Tadini

The enfant terrible of the Danish fashion scene, designer Henrik Vibskov, has set up shop in SoHo! The cozy, 850-square-foot boutique is the brand's third standalone shop and the first in the US. Located on Broome Street, the flagship, like everything else the Scandinavian dreams up, was built and decorated by the skillful and forward thinking hands of, you guessed it, Vibskov himself. The inviting interior is made of oxidized golden wood with shelves built of vintage furniture shipped from his homeland and an eye-catching installation of three-dimensional triangles hanging along the shop's walls inspired by the designer's apartment in Copenhagen. This is not the first time Vibskov's put his handyman skills to work; the designer builds all the sets for his biannual shows during Paris Fashion Week where he has been showing since January 2003. The tantalizing universes created by Vibskov are almost as celebrated as the label's ready-to-wear; in the past, his collections have been inspired by a wide range of unorthodox subjects and baptized with bizarre names like "The Big Wet Shiny Boobies", "The Solar Donkey Experiment" and "The Fantabulous Bicycle Music Factory." It is no wonder then that the Central Saint Martins graduate has garnered a cult following among the in-the-know crowd, including cool cats M.I.A, Bjørk, Sigur Ros and Lou Reed. In his spare time, Vibskov keeps busy by touring as a drummer for electronic band Trentemøller and exhibiting his curious installations at museums and galleries around the world. In addition to his own off-kilter line of drop-crotch shorts, plaid skirts, bold colored socks and trademark hats, Vibskov's new digs will also exclusively carry some handpicked brands like Cosmic Wonder, Uslu Airlines, Anntian, Kron Kron and Volta. Definitely worth a visit.
