Rating the Celebrity Fashion at the Golden Globes
by Abby Schreiber & Elizabeth Thompson
11 January 2016
Who wore a cape TWO years in a row, who set the red carpet on fire and who looked "nice and fine?" We weigh in on the celebrity fashion at the 2016 Golden Globes.
Jennifer Lawrence
"I love Jennifer's Dior dress -- it epitomizes American Hollywood glamour and reminds me of a contemporary version of what sport '50s socialite Slim Keith might wear." -- Abby
"Yeah, I liked this. At first, I thought her hair was a little too First Lady but then that damn side part and the beautiful twisted knots in the back grew on me and helped me to see how wrong I was. I realized Jennifer Lawrence's matronly updo had been carrying me the entire time." -- Elizabeth
Brie Larson
"She looks like a radiant disco goddess in her Calvin Klein Collection gown and what I wouldn't kill for those upper abs." -- Abby
"One time Brie Larson came to the Paper office to talk to us about a movie she had coming out. Usually, celebrities come with their publicists for these meet-and-greets but Brie came by herself and then hung out with us for like three hours while we awkwardly tried to get work done around her at our desks. She was wearing a Snoopy muumuu and was the absolute best. Come back, Brie!" -- Elizabeth
Cate Blanchett
"Not my favorite look I've seen Cate wear -- reminds me a bit like she's wearing a dress made out of My Little Pony hair -- but she is a red carpet treasure and breathes new life into the awards show style scene amidst the endless sequin mermaid gowns."
-- Abby
"Oh, I liked this! She looks like something Stevie Nicks would have draped over a lampshade in the '70s to make some mood lighting for blowing rails, which is to say, she looks perfect. Cate always brings elegant red carpet Fashion Fug that you just can't be mad at. What a strange girl she is, flung out of space." --Elizabeth
Jenna Dewan-Tatum
"I love this color on Jenna and the plunging neck and voluminous skirt makes this sequin gown stand out from the countless others." -- Abby
"Yeah, I thought she looked incredible. Her dress was even enough to detract from her husband's tragic doll hair; that's saying something."
Taraji P. Henson
"Here's Taraji striking the 'who, me?' pose looking like a vision." -- Abby
"Yes, YOU, Taraji! Flames on flames on flames." -- Elizabeth
Gina Rodriguez
"I love the color of Gina's Zac Posen gown and I also like that she left her neckline bare so you could really see the cut of the dress and the off-the-shoulder sleeves. I'm not sold on her hair though -- it reminds me too much of the style high school girls used to wear in the mid-aughts. At least she forwent a Bumpit!" -- Abby
"I agree, Abby. I used to try to do my hair like this in high school, before I knew about flat irons and top-shelf hair care products. This was also at a time in my life that Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks was my number one hair inspiration. I'm going to go reflect on this quietly in the office supply closet. Please give me space for the rest of the day." -- Elizabeth
Julianne Moore
"She looks a gorgeous, Hollywood version of X-Men's Mystique (and I mean that as a compliment)." -- Abby
"This was scream-into-a-throw-pillow perfection. Queen." -- Elizabeth
Laverne Cox
"She looks like a beautiful goddess who dabbles in Wicca." -- Abby
"You can't see it in this photo, but the neck draped down to the train in the back so beautifully. She was also MVP of last night's team 'Updo Sent From Heaven' (teammates include J. Law and Kate Winslet)." --Elizabeth
Emilia Clarke
"I can't tell if I think the cape saves the dress or ruins the dress. Side note: who won big at the Golden Globes last night? Leonardo DiCaprio? Wrong! Capes. Capes won big. The award goes to capes." -- Abby
"Capes elegantly whisper to the world, "fuck you," and that's why they should always be on the red carpet. Same with turtlenecks. I don't care about the rest of the dress." -- Elizabeth
Alicia Vikander
"On the one hand, I love how sporty and clean this Louis Vuitton gown is but on the other, I wish it had been all clean lines and didn't have those ruffles." -- Abby
"Very vertical blinds-chic. I love it." --Elizabeth
Jada Pinkett-Smith
"The color looks lovely on Jada and she can use those wings coming off her straps to whack Will if he gets out of line." -- Abby
"I liked the back of this." --Elizabeth
Lily James
"I love the subtle color on this dress and how she made the whole look feel modern by keeping her hair messy. That is the definition of a great piece-y bob. Damn." -- Abby
"Nice and fine." -- Elizabeth
Kate Hudson
"As the Internet pointed out, Kate is really rocking some Christina Aguilera 'Genie in a Bottle' steez and it WORKS. Plus, when you do as much yoga as she does and have a body so toned, it'd be a damn shame not to go for a bandeau every once in a while, ya know? Namaste." -- Abby
"She did the damn thing and wore a choker. And I like her shoes. But also, the choker. #KateHudsonChoker2016." -- Elizabeth
Kate Winslet
"I'm getting déjà vu because I feel like we've seen Kate in this look before but who cares? She looks like a BAMF." -- Abby
"100% yes. This is a look that says, 'I will push you into this shrub behind me and make you live there for the rest of your life and you'll just have to figure out how to make it work being outside of the Beverly Hills Hilton day in and day out, forever exposed to the elements, eating leaves and branches.' And I thought her updo was really nice too." -- Elizabeth
Katy Perry
"You can never go wrong when you channel Priscilla Presley mixed with a mobster's wife." -- Abby
"Yeah." --Elizabeth
Lady Gaga
"You've come a long way from meat dresses, baby." -- Abby
"Go get your EGOT, girl." --Elizabeth
Jennifer Jason Leigh
"Normally I'm not a huge fan of belts on dresses but here I really like how it adds a sparkly detail to her otherwise simple dress. I could've used a different hairstyle though but ... eh." -- Abby
"This was the face I made every time Ricky Gervais came on last night. The belt was what I didn't like about the dress, but I agree that it needed to be there. I don't know." --Elizabeth
Rachel McAdams
"I always think those messy, teased updos make you look like you stuck a fork in the socket but otherwise I think Rachel looks great. She's like a poinsettia come to life." -- Abby
"I thought this dress was ultra glamorous and looked like the lining of the drawer that Carol would keep her silky, talcum-scented underthings in or some curtains she might part to see who's coming up her drive this time of night. Into it." -- Elizabeth
Amy Adams
"Amy's Atelier Versace gown is beautiful and looks unexpectedly terrific with her tan and red hair." -- Abby
"Nice and fine." --Elizabeth
Zendaya
"Zendaya looks so sophisticated in her Marchesa gown and I like that she kept her makeup simple so it enhanced her youth and natural beauty instead of falling into the trap a lot of other young stars do where their makeup makes them look like 50-something cougars." -- Abby
"Agreed on all points, Abby. Best eyebrows of the night, too." --Elizabeth
Amy Schumer
"I live for dresses with pockets. Not convinced about the hair but everything else about the looks is on point." -- Abby
"If you can't wear a cape or a turtleneck, then you should pocket. So please just cape or turtleneck at some other point during this awards season, Amy." -- Elizabeth
Olivia Wilde
"The color of Olivia's dress is very cool and the whole look is so slinky and fun. The red eye shadow makes her look a bit sickly, though, but I get that she's going for a rock babe look. I GET IT, OKAY?" -- Abby
"Fine!" --Elizabeth
Viola Davis
"Viola looks like a celestial empress. Love." -- Abby
"My other favorite look of the night in addition to Lady Gaga. When in doubt, look like an achingly chic galaxy on the red carpet. But also be Viola Davis." --Elizabeth
Saoirse Ronan
"Saoirse's Yves Saint Laurent Couture gown designed by Hedi Slimane is regal and striking, even amid the sea of other white goddess dresses. Thumbs up." -- Abby
"TCAAC: This Counts as a Cape" -- Elizabeth
Melissa McCarthy
"The long, medallion necklace makes this otherwise pretty dress kind of 'Earth Mama'-ish but, you know what, you do you, Melissa. Enjoy those ~feel good vibes~ all night long." -- Abby
"She looked like a million damn dollars. When you can detract from the most elegant Poodle Princess in town hovering in the background like, "oh dear, I hope I'm not in any of these photos" (wink-wink, pose pose), you know you nailed that shit. Yes, Melissa M!" --Elizabeth
Jennifer Lopez
"Sometimes I think Jennifer Lopez is on another planet at these awards shows -- in a good way. It's like, 'all you actresses are down here playing it safe in your pastel goddess gown while I'm up here bursting out a lemon yellow dress with a cape -- another CAPE! -- a red lip and a sparkle shoe.' And thank god for that." -- Abby
"Two years of capes at the Globes, two years of perfection. Extra points for the most perfectly bitchy flipped hair to ever grace a red carpet and a House of Blanchett smirk that could make anyone burst into flames." -- Elizabeth
Maggie Gyllenhaal
"I love the neon pink lipstick with this gold-and-black dress. Maggie is so cool. Gahdamn." -- Abby
"I want that damn flower off her shoulder but I don't know what else could have gone there instead. So I accept Maggie's rose. We are in love and going on a helicopter date!" -- Elizabeth
Eva Longoria
"I don't like the double bows at all but I do really like the burst of flowers along the hips." -- Abby
"While you should always cape, turtleneck or pocket, you should never double bow. You're crazy for this one, Eva." --Elizabeth
