Comme des Garçons' Shadowy Armor

Save for a few rare looks, Comme des Gacons' fall 2019 collection was rendered entirely in black. With bulbous, removable rubber hip pads and hoods that looked like a combination between something the modern Grim Reaper would wear and armor from 16th century France, the show (and its heavy metal soundtrack) no doubt had a foreboding undertone. It was appropriately titled, "Many small shadows come together to make one powerful thing." Here's everything else you need to know.

Transforming Hoods

The single most standout pieces in the collection — for the way they looked but also perhaps, what they represented, were the armor-like hoods. Constructed in various shapes, they sometimes masked the model's face. Think of them as the most conceptual version of a hoodie yet.

Revamped Bustiers

It was at times subtle, but buried within all the dark layers were modified shapes of bustiers. Whether attached to shoulder harnesses or crafted in extra padded fabrics, they created different, new shapes on the body.

Trousers to Rule the World In

Pants — the kind that took up a seat for two — were made out of thick rubber material. They too looked like armor and conveyed a dark, ruler-of-the-world (or Underworld) aesthetic.

Flashes of Tartan

Possibly the most surprising part of the collection was the burst of yellow tartan that came through in pants and one long sleeve dress with black details.

Sheer Netting

Fishnet stockings and sheer netted fabrics paired under chunkier, textured fabrics were everywhere within the collections. Comme des Garçons wins the prize for the label least likely to follow the trends, but the netted material was the closest they came for fall 2019, what with a slew of other brands focusing on netted materials.
