Fancy Footwork (Vice) The New York-Montreal duo returns with their
sophomore effort, chock-a-block with the hippest Bar Mitzvah-ready electro since
Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me." Dave 1 and Pee Thug channel '80s production
values and straightforward lyrics into the sort of stuff that would make Bubbe
want to do the Electric Slide, were Bubbe the kind of grandmother who shops in
the shiny-sheer section at American Apparel and rocks out to Vice samplers.
Consider the effortless R&B of "Bonafied Lovin' (Tough Guys)," which wouldn't be
out of place in Billy Ocean's catalog, or the synth trills of "Momma's Boy,"
over which Dave jokingly speak-sings in typically vocoder'd fashion: "I think
she reminds me of my mother and she knows I like it/ I want a woman with the
same brown eyes." Gross, but sweet. Elsewhere, faster beats and an
ambulance-siren sample keep the title track sounding like the dirty end of a
very naughty evening, while Pee Thug solves the relationship strife in "My Girl
Is Calling Me (A Liar)" by casually telling Dave to take his angry lady to the
movies. Don't worry, Pee says, "You're gonna work it out." True enough, Pee. Bar
Mitzvah disco forever.
