Stop Mistaking Michelle Williams for Michelle Williams

We are blessed in this life to simultaneously enjoy the artistic output of two very powerful women named Michelle Williams. One is an acclaimed TV and movie actress, the other a musician and former member of Destiny's Child. One gave an inspirational Emmys acceptance speech about equal pay in Hollywood on Sunday night, the other received a whole lot of angry comments about it.

Musician Michelle Williams is understandably annoyed to be receiving hate for actress Michelle Williams' opinions re: gender equality, and she took to her Instagram story to ask that fans please take just one single look at her photos and figure out they've got the wrong person.

"Let's get one thing clear," Williams (musician) said during an Instagram Live session. "How come when y'all are tagging and congratulating a person — do y'all see that I'm Black when you go to my profile or tag, like when you search for the Michelle Williams? I am Black! OK? I ain't mixed with nothing. I ain't mixed with Persian, Russian. I am Black!" (Actress Michelle Williams doesn't have Persian or Russian heritage either, FWIW.)

"I thought [Michelle's speech] was her truth," Williams continued. "I thought it was awesome. I thought she was factual. I could be wrong. But yo, I just told this woman a few minutes ago on my Instagram, I was like, 'I'm so sorry that my namesake upset you! But can't you see that I'm Black?'"

Please take note. And maybe leave white Michelle Williams alone, too? You can watch her acceptance speech for Fosse/Verdon, below.
