Bar Review: Lani Kai

LESLIE PARISEAU
Tiki bars have officially entered the "few of our favorite things" category along with Marcel the Shell and WTFshouldimakefordinner.comLani KaiJulie Reiner's SoHo luau showed up just in time to fill the city's collective craving for a big glass of brain freeze in a pretty frosty mask mug. One evening  this week, a line up of bartenders from Dale DeGroff to Sasha Petraske sipped from Hawaii native Reiner's new teak cabinet of tricks including the bitters infused and Black Strap Rum soaked Black Pearl. Little plates of fried dough and sliders floated by and another passionfruit swizzle slid down quickly. One bartender in the crowd recounted his piña colada chugging record (11 seconds for Painkiller's pineapple sized tipple) while another shook off the rain from his motorcycle jacket and grabbed a flower garnished glass. Plant fronds and orchids bloomed up around them and Reiner's vision of the perfect Hawaii was complete- -- a rainy fall night in New York with the city's best bartenders gathered around a fireplace drinking beachy boozy cocktails. New York's newest beachfront property has arrived.
