Art Basel Miami 2011: Things to Look Out For, Part VIII

Gary Pini

As we edge closer and closer to Art Basel Miami Beach, PAPERMAG's Basel expert Gary Pini has been rounding up all the fun goings on in Florida next week. Here is part eight of his ongoing guide.

Two big Art Basel Miami events are not happening this year. Both the "Art Loves Music" free concert on the beach -- that has featured groups like Iggy Pop and the Scissor Sisters -- and Creative Time's "Oceanfront Nights" series of art, music, film and performance are not scheduled for 2011. Boo! No word yet from Jeffrey Deitch as to whether or not he is hosting his annual party behind the Raleigh Hotel.

One of our fave satellite fairs, Fountain, is back for a sixth year from December 1st to 4th in a big warehouse space at 2505 N Miami Avenue (at 25th Street, Miami).  They always feature the best cutting-edge and alternative artists and this year have teamed with Brooklyn's Grace Exhibition Space for a series of visual performances during the week. Fountain still hasn't divulged their musical performers for Friday and Saturday nights, but we'll keep you informed. Hey, how about SSION? We really love them.

has a new exhibit called "Inner Space, the Secrets of the Unknown" at their world headquarters in the Design District's Melin Building (3930 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 202). The opening is December 1 at 7 p.m. Hey Sam and Tury, we'll see you there!

Spotify and VICE magazine have a cool series of events scheduled at Miami's newest Design District nightclub, Ricochet (3250 NE 1st Avenue, Miami). There'll be music by NAS, Theophilus London, TV on the Radio and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings plus art by Luis Gispert, Rashid Johnson, Kalup Linzy, Mickalene Thomas and Daniel Fishel.  Yo, Alan.

Miami's top nightlife photographer, Seth Browarnik, is showing a cool series of his photos in the Shelborne Hotel (1801 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach) from November 30th to December 4th. The hotel will be celebrating their grand re-opening all week starting with party hosted by BING on November 30 that's styled by NYC fave Susanne Bartsch and another big bash on December 2nd with Theophilus London and Young the Giant playing poolside. Ocean Drive magazine hosts their annual bash in the hotel on Saturday night.

Reebok hosts a special "Classic" photo exhibit by Jonathan Mannion showcasing his work with legendary hip-hop artists including Run-D.M.C. and Notorious B.I.G. plus a series of his "illustrated" photos.  This show will be up all week at AE District gallery (3852 N Miami Avenue, Miami) and there's a party in the space every night with various DJs.

Miami's hottest new restaurant is Yardbird Southern Table & Bar (1600 Lenox Avenue, South Beach).  It's the new spot from celebrity-chef Jeff McInnis. Trust us, you won't be disappointed (and it's open late).

Ruinart -- the official champagne of Art Basel Miami 2011 -- will exhibit works by Gideon Rubin in their lounge in the Convention Center.  The Isreali-born artist will show 19 portraits "devoid of faces" include one of King Louis XV and one of Dom Thierry Ruinart.

David Bromstad -- artist/ HGTV "design star" and Color Splash host -- is re-designing the lobby of the Z Ocean Hotel (1437 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach) using his own art and furniture designs.  Plus he's re-branded the hotel as "The Bromstad" for the week.

Gen Art and smart cars host "Detour," a lounge space within the SCOPE fair (NE 1st Avenue @ 30th Street) from November 30th to December 3rd. Also look for a series of smart cars that have been custom designed by emerging artists.
